Storytime

Ever since Mierae was very little, storytime has been an important part of our routine. She had her favorite books that she loved to read over and over like "Big Red Barn" and "Goodnight Moon" when she was a baby. Then when she was a toddler we moved on to "But No Elephants" where Mierae learned several of her first words like "sorry," "happy," "sad," "all gone," and, of course, "NO." Then we moved on to David Shannon books and Mierae got serious about "Duck on a Bike."

In preschool she was fascinated with letters, and she loved to point out letters on buildings and write letters on paper. Once she took to reading in Kindergarten, she has been full-speed ahead. At her last assessment she was at the top level of second grade reading. She just started helping others read at school, and she has been enjoying reading the Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse series.

The other night Eric was away and I was busy with Henrik. I put the girls in my bed and asked them to look at books together until I could get back and read to them. When I returned, I heard Mierae reading and peeked inside the door to see this:

Such a sweet sister moment! Jolie, who loves listening to stories, and Mierae, who loves reading, cuddled together under the covers. It makes my heart swell to see this photo and remember that special moment. I'm so thankful for my daughters, and I'm so glad there is an ever-present love of books in our home.

What Robyn fails to tell everyone is that we also use reading time as our secret weapon to get the kids sleepy enough that they actually fall asleep. But, reading in bed does have its cognitive advantages, too.

That is SOO cute! I love it. I should have taken a picture of Mierae and Henrik tonight. She did the same thing with Henrik. It was on the couch though. :)
