Last week during our awesome outing to the Columbus Symphony, Robyn and I tried to compose a list of must-hears. These are pieces that you must absolutely hear live in a concert hall. Here is Eric's list. What would be on yours?
(Not in any particular order)
1. Gustav Holst's "The Planets"
2. Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9 Choral"
3. Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol"
4. Camille Saint-Saens' "Organ Symphony"
5. Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings" or Ralph Vaughan-Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis"
6. Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite"
7. Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite"
8. Hector Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique"
9. Mahler's "Symphony No. 1, Titan"
10. Tchaikovsky's "Romeo and Juliet" suite

I'll be COMPLETELY honest and bare my musical soul: I have no idea what any of those pieces sound like. Maybe I'd recognize Beethoven's 9th. My music class right now has really broadened my history of music knowledge, though, so I'm more intrigued than ever about these selections of yours. Would you believe that I had never sat down and listened to a Haydn, Beethoven, or Schumann piece? (Okay, everybody's heard Beethoven's 5th, that doesn't count). I'm now an "expert" on Beethoven's 8th and Schumann's "Carnaval" though, so I suppose those 2 would be on my list to hear live. :)
I remember going to a Salute to Youth concert at Abravanel Hall when I was like maybe 10 years old. I remember one of the pieces was Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto, and it was amazing. Hearing anything ridiculously hard in person just makes it seem ten times better.
I agree with Kristen... I love your list, though! I must say as I read through the list I had to smile and look off in the middle distance... :) I've played in at least 3 of them, and heard almost all of them live in concert. Hmmmmmm... I have to think about this and put my top ten on my blog...
