30th Birthday Week-Long Celebration

Our little family somehow started the tradition of celebrating birthdays for a whole week a few years ago. One day is much too short for a celebration in this family, so we have been carrying out the festivities for as long as possible. Here's how my birthday week went:

Saturday the 27th, the day before my actual birthday, we took the kids to Coldstone to get my free ice cream (and got some for them too). They were a little disappointed that we weren't at the "real" ice cream store (Graeter's) with a playland, but they didn't complain about eating the ice cream once we ordered!

Eric and I went out to dinner that night at Cap City Diner. There was an hour wait when we arrived; so, we opted to sit at a counter with no wait instead! It was actually very entertaining to be seated right in front of the salad and dessert corner of the kitchen and watch everyone work.

We enjoyed our meal and got a gigantic triple-layer chocolate cake slice to take home as my birthday cake (because we were tired of cooking and baking for Russian night on Sunday and weren't about to bake one more thing).

After dinner we went to Target and shopped for jewelry. Eric chose something to surprise me with the next morning.

During the week we watched the new Masterpiece Theater's version of "Emma," and I loved it so much that I decided to get it for myself as a birthday gift with money from my mother-in-law. :)

We made plans to use birthday email coupons I had been inundated with to keep the celebrations going into the weekend. Friday night we took the kids to dinner at Bob Evans and then got a free frozen custard at Culver's on the way home. Hooray for kids falling asleep in the car and transferring to their beds!

Saturday morning we took the kids to see the new Barbie movie "A Mermaid Tale" being shown at the zoo!

It was a BEAUTIFUL sunny day in Columbus, and we were so happy to be spending time outside.

After visiting the baby elephant and baby lions, we headed to the mall. I got a free cookie cake slice from Great American Cookies and free item from Bath and Body Works while the kids played at the playland. Then that night after putting the kids to bed, our friends came over to sit at our house while we went to a Columbus Symphony concert!

Barber's Violin Concerto and Mahler's First Symphony were on the program, and it was fantastic. It had been SO long since we'd attended a symphony concert! The only thing that could have made it any better would have been sitting on the stage ourselves. We loved every minute, and it was a great cherry-on-top to end my birthday week!

We had to chuckle when we got back and checked on the kids. They hadn't fallen asleep before we left, and they both ended up nodding off in Mierae's bed. Here's how we found them.

No wonder Eric would rather sleep on the couch than in our bed when the kids climb in with us!

It was a great week. Now we're on to planning Jolie's 3rd birthday next month!

Happy Birthday Robyn! Wow, I need to take some celebrating lessons from you...a whole week! Great job on maxing it out...it almost sounds exhausting (but that's 'cause I'm a bit of a home body). You look fabulous at 30!

What a FUN birthday week!! I so need to suggest that to Tyler but I don't think he'll go for it!
A symphony? That sounds so romantic and lovely.
And your girls? Just the cutest ever in front of the barbie poster and asleep on the bed.
I can't wait to hear all about how you spend Jolie's 3rd birthday. I can't believe she's 3!!!

How do you get all those coupons? Did you sign up somewhere? Freebies sound nice... also, how do you hear about events at the zoo?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! That is so fun to feel special all week. Isn't it funny how as a mom our birthdays consist of seeing "Barbie" at the zoo? It's great being a mom, and having these fun things to celebrate with our kids!!!

ps good idea with the take home chocolate cake!

How fun!! We should totally start doing the same thing--celebrating all week long! Sounds like it was a fantastic week! And that is hilarious how Mierae and Jolie fell asleep! Who knows why kids love to sleep sideways on the bed...Daphne does the same thing! So funny!

Elisa--I look at websites for places I like and see if they have an email newsletter. They'll usually send you something on your birthday. I got free stuff from Coldstone, Red Robin, Bd's Mongolian BBQ, Culver's, Great American Cookies and Baskin Robbins, plus some kind of buy-this-get-that-free deal from Arby's, Panera, and probably others I can't think of. Redplum.com is a place to find deals like that. But you can always check out your favorite places to see if they have birthday specials. We get an email newsletter from the zoo, but you can look on their website to get a monthly calendar of events.

Yipee! Happy birthday! Welcome to the world of everything 30. It is not so bad. I am glad you had such a fun birthday week. The picture of yoru girls asleep reminds me of teh way we would all share a bed at yoru house during sleepvoers. We looked just like that only with several more little girls :) They are just beatiful! And Culver's? Super jealous. I love that place. They need one close to us! Happy Birthday!!

I think it is great that you celebrate for a whole week! Much better than only one day that goes by really fast.

Happy Birthday Robyn! (Well, a late birthday wish.) Columbus, Ohio is one of my favorite places in the whole world! I feel like we are on a vacation right now, and we'll be home to see you all soon! :) Blogging makes the world a better place. Thanks for posting, it looks like you are all doing well.
