A Crash Bang Thanksgiving Break

I don't know how many people have heard of this book, but there's a story out there called "Santa's Crash Bang Christmas." It's about all of the accidents that happen to Santa as he makes his rounds on Christmas Eve. Well, our Thanksgiving weekend seemed to have a lot of "crashes" and "bangs," or at least shattering glass. Here are a few highlights from our extended weekend.

Eric accidentally turns on the wrong unit on the stove while making mashed potatoes, the one that has the glass lid for the pot on top of it. When Eric realizes what happened (the lid was starting to smoke) he quickly takes it off the unit, burning a kitchen towel, and then the lid shatters.

Mierae is suctioning a drinking glass to her mouth and chin and lets go. The glass hits the wall and falls to the floor and shatters.

Mierae is playing with a glass ornament from the Christmas tree, and the next thing we know, it shatters.

Mierae gets out a snowman mug from a Christmas bin, takes it into the kitchen, and the next thing we know, it shatters.

There really was more to our weekend than shattering glass! It was just crazy that it happened four times!! But, I'm very thankful that no one was burned, cut, or subject to eating glassy mashed potatoes.

Now, here are some other highlights of our weekend:

Wednesday was the COSI (Center of Science and Industry) Annual Community Open House where everyone gets in for free. Eric had never been, so I insisted that we go. :) Mierae seems excited to be there!

Jolie fell asleep on the way there, but she didn't want to miss out on the fun!

Mierae loved exploring and seeing all the fun things that were there. Here she is playing outside with a machine that sucks up little balls and shoots them out the top. Mierae kept chasing after all the balls trying to gather them all.

Mierae also enjoyed the "Bob the Builder" workshop, where she got to drive tractors and bulldozers, build towers with Legos, and lay a stone wall.

We really enjoyed our time there, and were very happy when Mierae fell asleep in the car on the way home!

Our Thanksgiving meal was with friends. We went to Ben and Vanessa Peterson's house and enjoyed our holiday with the Parkers, the Lawrences, the Streges, and the Littles as well. Eric made a chocolate pecan torte that was a big hit (mmmmm, I could go for some of that right now....) and tried a new recipe: cranberry chutney. Mierae got to sit at the big table next to Tyler.

Jolie did great. She loved eating Thanksgiving dinner as much as the rest of us. And she took a nap while we were there. Here's my favorite photo from the weekend, taken just before we ate.

We had a wonderful meal and even got to play a few games before the party broke up. We brought a Christmas show that the kids watched while the adults chatted and ate dessert, and then the adults played the card game "Set" and a new DVD version of "Mad Gab" that we bought on clearance last Christmas. It was fun to be with a group of people, a little more like our huge family gatherings on Thanksgiving, rather than being alone.

When we got home, we busted out the Christmas stuff. (Mierae fell asleep on the way home, but we weren't happy about it this time because it was 5:00 p.m.) We only got the tree up and put the lights on. We got Mierae to wake up by telling her we were getting the tree out. She wanted to help.

But, the real fun was, of course, playing in the now empty Christmas tree box!

Jolie joined in on the fun as well!

Friday morning Jolie woke me up at 5:00 am to eat, so I just stayed up and left to do my Black Friday shopping. I got to JoAnn right when they opened, chose and got in line to get my 99 cent flannel cut, when I thought maybe I should go look for what I REALLY needed to get that morning. A nice lady in line ahead of me said she'd watch my cart, so I left to get the item. But, to my utter horror, they were already sold out! I was SO mad! It wasn't even a door-buster. So, I had to choose something else and make do. (I can't reveal what I was looking for because it's a Christmas present for my parents...) But, I found some other great buys to make my visit worthwhile. I went to Michael's after that, and then to Macy's. When I got home, Eric took off to Radio Shack and then to Target. He won the "best bargain" award for the shirt he got at Target for $1.98. Way to shop, Eric! I have to admit, the shopping bug still hasn't left me. It's amazing how much money you can plunk down when so many things are "such a great deal." :)

For the most part, that was our weekend! We did get to enjoy some rest, finally, when we came home early from Church Sunday because Mierae had a cough and we didn't want to take her to nursery. Both girls fell asleep in the car on the way home, and we all napped for 3 hours!! What a great way to end our weekend.

All that shattering glass!! Yikes! I think with kids it's inevitable. Like all the times the kids want to get their own drink, take the cup into the bathroom, and the glass slips...tile floor is not forgiving! Or when Devin turned the oven on not knowing that there was a glass dish inside...he takes it out, and decides to cool it off quickly by running the cold water over it!!! HA!!! It completely shattered in the sink...did a number on our garbage disposal! Another reason to be grateful that we're renters and not still homeowners!! We just call maintenance! :)
Looks like you had a really fun Thanksgiving! We sure missed you, though!!! :(
