Here she is modeling a pair last night as she also tried out her new headphones to the portable DVD player for our flight Monday.
So, I was a little anxious today... I was anticipating accidents, so I was surprised and pleased when I asked Mierae to sit on the toilet a half-hour after Eric left for school and she went! Wow, what a great start! The second time, though, we missed, as I had to go get Jolie, and Mierae went in her underwear, feeling for the first time that something was definitely different and not quite right. Well, I expected that. Accident #2 wasn't on the carpet, but on a step stool. It wasn't as bad and was definitely easier to clean up. I was looking up! This wasn't going to be so bad after all! Accident #3 she just dropped a pair of underwear in the toilet as she sat trying to decide which pattern to wear next! It was pretty funny. Eric laughed so hard when I told him! Mierae went every time I asked her after that, and I tried to overdramatize the praise and excitement each time, although I was feeling so happy I didn't need to exaggerate too much. The peak of my day was in the afternoon when she went and then didn't want to get off. I wondered why at first, but it was fine with me as long as she really stayed sitting while I got Jolie who was screaming at the time. Well, Jolie and I came back to find the reason behind Mierae's lingering: my little girl pooped in the toilet on her first day of potty training! It was all I could do not to jump up and down right there in front of the toilet. I seriously almost cried for joy. I was so proud. And Mierae was so proud of herself, pointing to what she'd done and beaming at me! That's my girl! I was telling Eric about it on the phone a little while later and recounting the days events thus far, when we took a turn for the worse. I looked over at Mierae playing on the cushionless couch just in time to see spots darkening at her feet. Needless to say, I hardly said good-bye to Eric as I dropped the phone, raced to Mierae, grabbed her and ran for the bathroom. But, the damage was obviously already done. It was bound to happen, but after the elation of a few moments earlier, it seemed especially discouraging. But, Mierae wasn't about to lose face. She didn't even want a diaper on when she went down for a nap, even though I did get one on her (with underwear on over them :)--and she stayed dry!), nor when she went to the Roberts' while Eric and I went out on our date. (I really did feel bad about bring her over on "Day 1" though.) She had another accident there, but that was to be expected too. She stayed dry for the rest of the night, though. It was just too bad the center of the couch was covered in baking soda and vinegar when my Visiting Teachers and our Home Teachers both came over tonight. :) But we're doing it. And Mierae's motivation isn't treats or stickers, but bringing a smile to her mom's face and making her own heart, and smile, swell with pride.
