This year we found ourselves surrounded by friends from our missions and other friends who also served in Russia, so we were able to have our Russian night realized by those who would truly appreciate it the most. We loved having them all here, and missed those who couldn't make it!
I always forget how much work it is to put on a Russian night--probably because Eric does most of the work! The cooking and baking usually takes two days before the actual event. This year we made schi (instead of borscht) which has onions, garlic, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and chicken with dill; vareniki (potato-filled dumplings); baked pieroshki (yeast dough we filled with beef, cabbage, mushrooms, onions and garlic); and two kinds of bread: batoni (white) and our version of chornyi khleb (a dark bread made with rye).
I am SO, so disappointed that I didn't get ANY photos of our guests or the food they brought. One couple brought a cold "salat" with potatoes, cucumber and tomatoes; one couple brought plov (rice with meat, carrots and special spices); another couple brought a honey tort with sweetened condensed milk in the frosting; and another brought real Russian chocolates from a Russian store in town and a chocolate tort. YUM! It was quite the feast! And we fit 21 people into our little two-bedroom town home. It was so fun! We can't wait until next year when we get to do it again.
Oh, yeah--it was my 30th birthday yesterday too.
I guess I did get a picture of the cakes! Our guests had no idea they were bringing my birthday cake to the party. :)

I loved having some good Russian food, even if the food didn't have that authentic Russian flavor that only comes with buying products there. Thanks to everyone for coming and bringing different dishes.
Happy Birthday Robyn!! I always forget that our Birthdays are only a couple of days a part!
Happy 30th!!
Your "birthday" party, I mean Russian party (smile) looked like so much fun! How great to have others there that appreciate the food!

My goodness, i'm so jealous. I bet Rach was there and I bet she brought the tort. Happy Birthday sweet sis! I sure miss you and love you and miss our time in Ukraine together. Sweet memories i have with you!! How awesome that we both married men who speak russian...too bad I don't anymore :) hahaha
You guys do such fun things! It sounds like a successful 30th birthday! I love how your mention of it being your birthday was like an afterthought...you are so funny.
So I'm sorry I didn't actually talk to you on your birthday. I really was there when we called you, but I guess the other sillies just took too long when they were talking. I will just have to call you on my own.
Oh, and in response to your comment - I am doing pretty well now. Thanks for asking. :)
How fun! I'm so glad you got to do something exciting like that for your birthday! I'm so sad every time we don't get to celebrate with you, but I guess you made up for it plenty! Happy Birthday--a week ago...:)
Looks like a lot of work, but so cool that you did the Russian night! Hope you had a wonderful birthday.
